The 'Messiah' appellation, while suitable for a king, does not sit well on someone who clearly was a prophet. "It's not as if prophets had no place in the Jewish community," says James. "Quite the contrary. Prophets were uncommonly revered and a new incumbent would ordinarily be considered a link of a long and deeply revered chain or disciplic succession of spiritual leaders that began with Moses. What is more, these spiritual leaders were more powerful and prestigious than even the king or political leader of this steeply religious and God-fearing community." In other words, Jesus could have made infinitely better progress in his mission had he assumed the traditional role of a prophet.
