Are the Bible's stories true?

The following is an introduction to the field of biblical archaeology and its current state of affairs. The December 1995 Time magazine cover article, the same which inspired me to undertake this search, is used here to give an unbiased perspective on this subject.

Since it all began with a Time magazine article, I think I will use the same to introduce the subject of missing archaeological evidence for the Bible. The article title, 'Are the Bible Stories True?' (the cover reads, 'Is the Bible fact or fiction?') and written by Michael Lemonick and his team makes a impartial and accurate assessment of the current state of affairs or impasse that exists in the field of biblical archaeology.

It is important to know and establish that biblical scholars view on biblical archaeology is different from the one peddled by religious institutions. The Jews and Christians implicitly believe that archaeological proof for the Bible to everyone’s satisfaction has gloriously been obtained. All si well with the Bible and thank you God for kindly revealing everything so brilliantly to us unfortunately souls.

While this is commendable stance to take from a religious point of view, the embarrassing fact is that it is the very same archaeological data produced and proffered by the scholars to declare that all is not well with the Bible’s historicity that has been used (with just a dash of lemon and fanatical zeal) to declare exactly the opposite!

My personal opinion is that one’s religious views ought not to be questioned by a science which itself is not above reproach. Science should never have traipsed into hallowed grounds such as these. It is unfair to push religionist into a corner like this and compromise their intellectual integrity. However, it has been done, and now we have to resolve this issue one way or another.

Please read the introductory Time article given below and come up to speed in the subject of biblical archaeology.

IN ANOTHER PART OF THE WORLD, it would have been a straightforward public-works project. A highway was too narrow to handle the increasing flow of traffic, so the authorities brought in heavy equipment to widen it. Partway through the job, however, a road-leveling tractor uncovered the opening to a cave no one knew was there. Work came to an immediate halt, and within hours a scientific swat team descended on the site to study it...read full article.
